Final Forms

I decided to change and alter the whole content from my drafts ‘ the wicked Afro ‘ to ‘molly’ this is due to the fact that it didn’t conform to the genre of hip hop and more of Afro swing. The whole dark with the red sections all add to the general house style of the products. They compliment each other through this, not looking completely different furthermore its dark colours relate to the genre of hip hop. I took Inspiration from a lot of different magazines. They all seemed to have the common theme of the logo being bigger or overlapping the head of the main artist or featured artist. However a lot of the Hip Hop magazines had their masthead fully go across the top of the front page. I challenged the convention by placing it in the top left, this is due to the fact that i looked neater and furthermore the logo is an M. Which I manipulated by extending its right leg on Photoshop. So this gave a way for me to present the logo as well as the masthead. on the other hand I was heavily inspired by a contents page by the source with a well known hip hop rapper ‘ Ice-cube ‘. The source’s has a close of up ‘Ice-cube’s’ face, i didn’t want that to be the same case as you could fully see his face but I didn’t want that shown as it would have went against the whole dark theme. So as well as  using a picture with low lighting covering majority of his face, I manipulated the picture using Photoshop.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

My skills in photoshop has drastically improved and is proven through the amount of layering and further manipulations to images. In addition the layout of the page including the sell lines and everything looks more professionals and like a real media text in comparison to the college magazines front cover and contents. furthermore getting used to the tools not only made the use of photoshop much easier but it also shortened the time I took to to create and also edit the final product. My understanding of the conventions for the genre has also been refined and advanced also implementing the necessary motives any media form. Say for example college in comparison the hip hop we have to be more weary of the audience and their different demographic and lifestyle.

What kind of media institution (publisher) might distribute your media product and why?

Harris Publications is probably the best institution for my hip hop magazine due to the fact that it is the main publisher for XXL magazine. This is one of the most successful platforms for such type of genre, this is evident in the other magazines being published by them. To further suggest this is the best option, most of the magazines are the most influential when it came to my own magazine.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My media product fully conforms but also develops the hegemonic stereotypical features of a hip hop magazine. This is proven in the use of the conventions in the magazine throughout. Linking to hip hop, a dark theme and house style I used a red black gold and white theme. To further the use of the conventions, I used a variety of black models which is heavily affiliated with the hip hop genre. I used and took inspiration from a lot of hip hop magazines, to merge into one. This is shown through the positioning of the model and also the colour scheme. I was heavily inspired by one of the source magazine’s contents page, the one with icecube. I really liked the fact that the red covered layered half of the page to enable the people to add writing to the contents page bringing in a different dimension. This really attracted me and so as a result i took it and implemented it in my own work.
